Sign up for the SAT at the College Board's website.
If you are unsure which test you should be registering for, or which test date is best, please contact your counselor.
SAT Preparation
1) The best preparation for the SAT is taking challenging classes and doing well in them. The material on the SAT is the same material students learn in their high school courses. Students who study hard in challenging classes tend to score highest on the SAT.
2) Take the PSAT (Fall of the sophomore and/or junior year) and use your score report and online tools to create a personalized SAT study plan.
3) College Board - SAT Prep - this section of the College Board website has a free SAT question of the day, free full-length online practice test, and other tools to help students prepare.
3) Local SAT Prep classes - We generally recommend the classes at York College, Penn State York, or HACC. Brochures and further information are available in the Guidance Office
PSAT
PSAT is an excellent way to practice taking standardized tests and get a feel for how well you may do on the SAT. PSAT scores are not reported to colleges. South Western High School will offer the PSAT to any interested sophomore or junior the second Wednesday in October. The PSAT takes place during during the regular school day (periods 1 and 2). The cost will be approximately $15 for the test. Registration forms will be passed out in homeroom. Additional forms are available in the Guidance Office.
SAT/PSAT Accommodations
Students with documented disabilities may be eligible for accommodations on the SAT and/or PSAT exams. If you require accommodations contact your Guidance Counselor ASAP. Paperwork to determine eligibility must be filled out well in advance of the actual test date. For the best chance of getting accommodations, meet with your Counselor at least four months before the day of the exam.
